We're two passionate birth & postpartum Doulas, Deidra Williams and Sattina Dabb, committed to transforming the birthing experience in the Maritimes region. Inspired by our own journey through women-empowering programs, we founded Nia—named after the Kwanzaa principle meaning 'purpose.' Our mission is twofold: to reduce the need for c-sections and to address the disproportionate mortality rates among Black mothers and babies in North America.
At Nia, we offer inclusive services tailored to every family's needs. We're here to provide informed, empowering support to help you make the best choices during your birthing experience. Together, we aim to foster a new, positive dialogue around pregnancy and birth.
Doulas With Purpose
I have built my advocacy experience in and support for the Black & Indigenous community in various roles. I’ve also volunteered for the Parents of Multiple Births Association (POMBA) and I'm very experienced in working with families of multiples, navigating the pregnancy and potential complications that can arise when it’s considered a high-risk pregnancy.
I’m very excited to be on this journey with my Doula Sister, Sattina, to support more women / pregnant people, more babies, and more families
After experiencing miscarriages and a termination, myself, I realized there is a huge lack of care, and emotional support for people during and after experiencing this type of personal trauma. The empathy, patience and emotional support needed is crucial for mental health, grieving and healing.
I was born and raised in Halifax NS, and currently in Dartmouth NS. I am a proud wife, and a mother of twins plus one. I trained to become a Doula in 2019. In 2021, I trained to provide postpartum support, and support to anyone who has gone through a termination process. I got Internationally Certified by ProDoula as a Birth Doula in 2023.
Since my 20’s, I have emotionally supported women postpartum, and women going through miscarriages. I realized there are doulas for this because women and pregnant people are often left alone, while miscarrying, and also following pregnancy terminations
Deidra Williams
Founder, Owner, Birth Doula
Sattina Dabb
Prenatal, Labour & Birth Doula
I was born and raised in Cherry Brook Nova Scotia and currently reside in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
I am a proud wife and mother of five. Family relationships and building strong confident loving children is extremely important to me, staying connected emotionally and physically I believe is a strong foundation in building unbreakable bonds. I am a Red seal welder by day working at the Halifax shipyard working diligently to build ships for Canada’s next navel fleet. I find my job most rewarding when I have to overcome challenges and barriers on a daily basis.
When I was in my early twenties I had the pleasures of being present at the birth of my younger cousin. This experience instantly resonated with me and I fell in love with the whole idea of the miracle of birth fascinating, with the unmatched capability of the female body. After this experience, I did everything possible to get back into the delivery room where the magic happens. I helped many friends and family members bring their bundles of joy into this world, coaching and tending to their many needs. Doing so allowed me to feel part of the great miracle of birth. I have a passion and excitement for being a part of something greater than myself.
My Doula Sister, Deidra, and I connected after we realized we shared this same passion for helping women during this most vulnerable and life changing event in their lives. The qualities that we both possess such as caring, nurturing, empathetic and empowering, makes it easier for us to assist parents during this life altering time.
I completed training with ProDoula and I am currently on a path to certifying as a Postpartum doula learning from other experienced doula's on all things labour and delivery. I am now a trained doula at your service.
